We start with the initial consultation.
- We meet with you to assess the need for property development.
- After that meeting, we write a follow-up outline of concepts for the proposed project based on sound horticultural practices. This outline is not a formal landscape design. Rather, it’s a way for you to get a feel for the project’s parameters.
When you are comfortable with the outline, the next step is the formal landscape design. There are three parts to this step of the process:

Part 1. Program Development
- We’ll meet with you at the site to talk at length about your ideas and requirements.
- We’ll assess the site and take measurements and photos as needed. We’ll also take lots of notes!
Part 2. Concept Development
- A scaled base map will be created that shows you where the residence/building is on the lot and other key site elements.
- Next, a preliminary landscaping plan will be created for you that may include conceptual space usage for arrival and outdoor entry, living/entertaining, food preparation, dining, recreational, work/storage and garden(s).
- Finally, the preliminary plan is presented to you for review and comments.
Part 3. Final Design
- After you have approved the preliminary plan, we’ll develop a to-scale drawing of the final landscape plan. This drawing will be tailored to meet site demands and your needs and desires.
- The final landscape plan will specify hard goods and plant materials and provide recommendations for installation of all of the project’s components.
- When the final plan is complete, it will be presented to you for comment and approval.
After you have approved your final landscape design plan, the next step is to build it. Spear’s Landscape, Inc. has extensive project management experience so the project can move forward smoothly:
- The bid(s) are presented to you for approval.
- Installation (and phasing if necessary) are scheduled.
- The work is begun on time and finished within budget.
- We review the completed installation with you and propose a maintenance schedule for new plantings.
- Let the entertaining begin! Call your friends and wake the neighbors – it’s time to show them your fabulous new outdoor space. Prepare to accept compliment
